The Gosh Ness Monster Friday 22nd May 2026 to Sunday 24th May 2026 Take a Hastings DEMU to Scotland?... it will never happen, they said! Well, with thanks to GBRf and Hastings Diesels Limited (HDL), we are pleased to present this exciting opportunity to travel on the Hastings DEMU on an exploration from the Southern extremities of Tonbridge, all the way to Inverness, and back again! A first-time visit of a Hastings DEMU unit to Scotland... it's going to be an experience that will stay with you forever. And in true BLS Style, we will be covering a number of loops and items of rare track, which we are sure a Hastings unit has never frequented before. The Hastings DEMUs are from a class of 23 diesel-electric trains built in the late 1950s to replace steam-hauled stock operating between London and Hastings via Tunbridge Wells. The six-coach units, incorporating diesel generators at each end, were unique in having especially narrow bodies which enabled them to pass through the unusually narrow tunnels on the Hastings line. We are very lucky to still be able to travel on one of these beautifully maintained units, after they were finally withdrawn in 1986. With a number of convenient boarding points from Tonbridge, all the way up the WCML, you are sure to be able to join us for this fantastic weekend away. We will have numerous photo stop opportunities as we head North to enable you to capture that unique and priceless photo, and make sure you wave at the numerous photographers who will be out to see this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. After our trip up the WCML, covering a number of rare and sought after loops, we expect to arrive in Edinburgh in the early evening on your first night, allowing time for some socialising with friends, or to explore this spectacular City. On Saturday, you have time for breakfast before we leave the rather unusual platform 0 at Haymarket for our scenic journey to Inverness, via the Highland Main Line. Inverness, a large city on Scotland's northeast coast, where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth, is the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands, and, of course, the home of the Loch Ness Monster! You will have a couple of hours' break here to enjoy the crisp, clear Scottish air and maybe a meal and drink in one of the many local restaurants and pubs near the station. We leave Inverness around 15.00, heading for Haymarket, but this time via Elgin, Keith and Aberdeen, before heading south along the spectacular coastline, finally crossing both the Tay and Forth Bridges, arriving back into Haymarket for more time at leisure in Edinburgh. Sunday is of course our day to head home, but again, you will have time for breakfast before joining us at Edinburgh Waverley this time for our run via the WCML, crossing London via Kensington Olympia and finally arriving at Tonbridge in the late evening. As you would expect, and to keep out of the way of a significant number of faster services, we will cover a number of rare loops and crossovers on our route south. We are working in partnership with the fantastic team at HDL, who will provide their famous buffet service and souvenir sales stand. There will be a charity raffle each day supporting our amazing good cause. The Buffet car, accessible to passengers in DEMU 1013 will be open throughout for the sale of hot and cold food & drink at reasonable prices. In addition, a mini-counter service will operate from one of the van ends in DEMU 1001. Standard Plus guarantees a seat in a DMBS vehicle, so you are in prime position to hear the English Electric engine working hard! And for those of you that love a good table, convenient for your maps, snacks and well-earned refreshing drinks, we will be delighted to confirm that table seating will be allocated strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. This charter will be raising funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. All times and routing are indicative until confirmed by Network Rail. Final routing and timings are usually confirmed by Network Rail five days before travel and will be enclosed with your e-ticket. The Golden Hind Saturday 23rd May Destination: Plymouth Departing from: Birmingham Snow Hill, Widney Manor, Warwick Parkway, Banbury, Oxford, London Paddington Classes of Travel: Pullman, First Class & Standard (Non-Dining) We journey across the Midlands, Great Western Mainline and the South West with Western Champion, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the end of her working career under the Western Region of British Railways.
The West Midlands Deviator Saturday 23rd May 2026 With 2026 close to yielding the maximum daylight, we are delighted to offer you an opportunity to explore the railways of the West Midlands in some depth. That's not all - included is some sought after track that is very likely to be required (Burton Wetmore Depot) and a line up of splendid English Electric heritage traction. For those wishing to maximise their mileage - the day starts early. We have opened up what otherwise would have been an empty coaching stock move to our passengers - affording you the opportunity to enjoy Romic Class 20 haulage from Derby (or East Midlands Parkway) to Bedford, where our tour proper will begin. Our return journey to East Midlands Parkway will be behind a splendid Class 50 locomotive provided by the Class 50 Alliance. We deviate via Castle Donington to approach Burton on Trent from the East. We will need to cross the entire ladder at Wetmore Junction so as to gain access to Nemesis Rail Depot. Here we will negotiate at least one of the roads adjacent to the shed building and, subject to the usual operational caveats, we may receive a little traction assistance from a resident locomotive. On departure, and after further navigation of the crossovers that form Wetmore Junction, we head west passing Lichfield City and following the Sutton Coldfield line. At Aston, we are routed via the diversionary line to Stechford and on to Leamington Spa via the Kenilworth Branch. After what we hope will be a quick reversal, and with the Class 20 locomotives once again at the helm, we proceed to the historic town of Stratford upon Avon. For some, the opportunity of a two hour lunchtime break perhaps to visit one of the many public houses and restaurants will prove compelling. For others however, the opportunity to further explore the local railways will take precedence as we embark on a lunchtime mini tour to Birmingham Moor Street via Whitlocks End and back. Our second departure from Stratford upon Avon once again takes us to central Birmingham - this time New Street station and pathed routed the alternative route via Dorridge. We climb through the tunnels to the west of New Street station, invariably a test for most diesel locomotives on long passenger trains and the acoustic performance can be eagerly anticipated. We veer right at Soho South Junction so as to route us towards Bescot and Walsall where we reverse. Once again the Class 20's lead and we take the route via Darlaston Jn as far as the goods loop at Bushbury Jn, where again we reverse so as to join the Oxley Chord towards Alstom's Oxley Traincare Centre, which we pass. However, we journey only as far as Codsall. Here another reversal uses the crossover outside of the station - most uncommon for a locomotive hauled passenger train. We continue via Wolverhampton station, Bescot and Aston into Birmingham New Street allowing those who wish to do so an opportunity to alight. For those who remain, our class 50 locomotive is now employed to take us back across the Sutton Coldfield line and via Castle Donington for set down stations south as far as Bedford. UK Railtours would like to thank our operator Hanson and Hall Rail Services, the Class 50 Alliance and Romic Group for the provision of today's locomotives. We would also like to thank Nemesis Rail for the provision of Mk3 rolling stock and their invaluable contribution towards today's train. All timings are provisional and intended only as a guide. The Royal Duchy Sunday 31 May 2026 These ever-popular summer day trips by steam train run from Bristol Temple Meads, Yatton and Taunton to Devon & Cornwall. The route includes travelling along the internationally famous sea wall at Dawlish, crossing Brunel's famous Saltash Bridge into Cornwall, and some of the most varied and exciting scenery in the country. Passengers can choose to spend time in Plymouth or travel on to Par, where buses are provided for visits to Fowey or Charlestown. Our train leaves Bristol Temple Meads steam hauled by the iconic No. 34028 Eddystone and stops to pick up further passengers at Yatton and Taunton. Almost immediately on departure from Taunton, our steam locomotive will be working hard as it tackles the climb to Whiteball Summit. We stop at Exeter St. David's station for our locomotive to take on water and for more passengers to join the train. We leave Exeter and follow the Exe Estuary to the seaside. We then travel along the famous sea wall between Dawlish and Teignmouth, an experience not to be missed. After Newton Abbot, our steam locomotive will demonstrate her real strength as she powers up some of the steepest main line gradients in the country. First there is the difficult climb to the summit at Dainton Tunnel, followed by a dramatic drop down to Totnes, then an equally difficult climb up Rattery Bank before descending to Plymouth. Passengers have the option to alight at Plymouth or remain on the train to Par. There will be over five hours free time to explore the historic maritime city of Plymouth which includes the Hoe, the ancient Barbican and seafront areas, and the National Marine Aquarium. We leave Plymouth, steam hauled, and cross the river Tamar on Brunel's masterpiece, the Royal Albert Bridge, to enter Cornwall. Our train continues through the magnificent Cornish countryside to Par, where there will be a break of more than three hours. Steam Gala 5th June 2026 - 7th June 2026 A must-see for all fans of steam locomotives, our steam gala returns for 2026. This event will be a rare opportunity to see a former Wallsend workhorse in steam on Tyneside for the first time in over 50 years! ?? We are excited to announce that Peckett & Sons No. 1351 'Lion' will be visiting us for our Steam Gala on 5th-7th June. Built in 1914 for the Royal Arsenal's extensive internal railway system in Woolwich, 'Lion' is the sole surviving example of Peckett's 'E' class. In 1950, she was sold to the Wallsend Slipway and Engineering Company and worked on the quayside by the river Tyne until entering preservation at the Chasewater Railway in 1974. This will be the locomotive's first visit to another railway since returning from overhaul and we are grateful to Lion's owner and the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway for allowing us to return this true Wallsend workhorse to North Tyneside. ??? There will be an intensive timetable of passenger and demonstration freight trains running throughout the weekend including double headers and top and tailed trains. We'll also be joined by an impressive display of classic cars and local history stalls inside the museum.
Lord of the Isles Saturday 6th June 2026 to Monday 8th June 2026 The Lord of the Isles - Saturday 6th June 2026 to Monday 8th June 2026 The Branch Line Society, in partnership with the Class 50 Alliance, The Fifty Fund and GB Railfreight, are pleased to offer you this opportunity to Hoover your way up to Scotland for an exploration of numerous lines not covered regularly by loco hauled trains, never mind trains hauled by Class 50s! The British Rail Class 50 was designed to haul express passenger trains at 100 mph, and were built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows between 1967 and 1968. They were regularly found hauling express passenger trains on the then non-electrified section of the West Coast Main Line between Crewe and Scotland. The class gained the nickname "Hoovers" because of the noise made by the clean air plant at the No. 2 end, prior to refurbishment, which was likened to that of a vacuum cleaner, a name believed given to them by the staff at Paddington Station. Once the electrification from Crewe to Glasgow was completed the locomotives were moved to the Great Western Main Line (GWML) out of Paddington to allow the retirement of most of the remaining diesel-hydraulic locomotives then in use. As trains on the GWML steadily moved to High Speed Train operation from 1976, the Class 50s moved to hauling trains between London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids, and also trains from London Paddington to Hereford and Worcester via Oxford until the majority of those trains too were taken over by IC125 operation. The class was steadily retired from service in the late 1980s and early 1990s as their services moved to operation by second-generation DMUs. The Fifty Fund and the Class 50 Alliance are two interrelated organisations that work together to look after six class 50 locomotives. The Alliance owns and maintains the locomotives, and The Fifty Fund supports the work of the Alliance through fund raising and promoting the locomotives' and their operation. Following the hard work started by Dave Keogh and Jonathan "Gus" Dunster, the group were able to secure 50035 as their first loco in August 1991, and the new chapter in the story of Class 50 preservation had started. And so we come to 2026, and what a few days we have in store for you. We start early on Saturday morning at the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) station in Kidderminster, where a resident SVR Class 50 will take us forward to the Reverse Point, before our double headed Class 50's will take us out onto the mainline as we start our journey to Polmont in Scotland... the long way! Our route takes us through Birmingham New Street to pick up passengers, then onwards through Stafford, Crewe and Wigan for more pick-ups, before we veer right at Lostock Hall Junction and head for the spectacular Settle & Carlisle Railway via Blackburn and Clitheroe. This most famous of lines, which crosses the remote, scenic regions of the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines, runs between Settle Junction, on the Leeds-Morecambe line, and Carlisle, near the English-Scottish borders. The historic line was constructed in the 1870s and has several notable tunnels and viaducts, and we are sure it will bring out the photographers to see us passing. After a further pick up and short break in Carlisle to take some precious photos of our locos, we head North via a number of rare loops before our arrival at Motherwell for our first set-down. Onwards via Mossend and Cumbernauld before we set down at Falkirk Grahamston and Polmont in the early evening to allow you to retire to your accommodation and/or the pub to reflect on an amazing day and look forward to what is to come on day 2! Sunday... Day 2... and what a day in store. With our Class 50's now in top and tail formation, our early start from Polmont takes us via Falkirk Grahamston for a pick-up, before onwards to Cowlairs East Jn/North Jn, before we head North via Dumbarton Central, Crianlarich and finally arriving in the breath-taking town of Oban. Oban is a resort town, and despite its small size, it is the largest town between Helensburgh and Fort William. During the tourist season, the town can have a temporary population of over 24,000 people. The attractive bay forms a near perfect horseshoe, protected by the island of Kerrera; and beyond Kerrera, the Isle of Mull. With a break of around 3 hours, you will have time to explore this lovely town, have a meal and drinks with friends, or if you are feeling fit, head up to McCraig's Tower, the most prominent attraction in Oban. Once back on board, we head back South to Glasgow Central High Level, via Dalmuir, Westerton, Glasgow Central Low Level, and Rutherglen West Curve. A very quick break here for a leg stretch and more photos, before we return out of Glasgow and head for Wemyss Bay via Paisley Gilmour Street. Another short break, then its onwards back to our base with set downs at Falkirk Grahamston and Polmont again. And after all the excitement of the last 2 days, it's time to head back to Kidderminster... the interesting way! After a leisurely breakfast at your accommodation, we leave Polmont and Falkirk Grahamston at a respectable time in top and tail formation, before heading for Carlisle via Larkfield Jn and Kilmarnock. A set down and 45 minute break at Carlisle, allows us to run our 2nd loco round to then double head Southbound to tackle the gradients over Shap before we set down at Wigan North Western, Crewe, Stafford and Birmingham New Street. Our final few miles takes us to Stourbridge Junction and Kidderminster for final set downs before we cover the heritage line connection onto the Severn Valley Railway and finish our epic few days away in Kidderminster SVR. As you would expect from a BLS tour, we expect to cover a number of rare and interesting bits of track over the 3 days... highlights will include: Lockerbie DPL, Beattock Summit DPL and Law DPL on day 1; Down Greenhill Branch Loop, Craigendoran WH Loop, Dumbarton Goods, Rutherglen West Curve and Dunrod Loop on Day 2, and finally Larkfield Curve, Kilmarnock Through Line, New Cumnock UGL, Thornhill UPL and Oxenholme UGL on day 3. On board we will have a buffet serving a selection of hot and cold drinks and snacks, and we will be running our very successful on board charity raffle. All profits raised from this fixture will be for the Class 50 Alliance. All times and routing are indicative until confirmed by Network Rail. Final routing and timings are usually confirmed by Network Rail five days before travel and will be enclosed with your e-ticket. 85 Years Of Letting Off Steam: An Evening With Christopher Awdry Thursday 25 June 2026 On 25 June, London's iconic Eventim Apollo will host a truly special one-off evening. Promoted by Splot and Full Steam Ahead, '85 Years Of Letting Off Steam', celebrates the life and legacy of Christopher Awdry, storyteller, railway historian, and custodian of one of the world's most beloved literary worlds. For over eight decades, Christopher Awdry has lived a life shaped by steam, story and tradition. Together with his father, Wilbert Awdry, the Reverend who first imagined the Island of Sodor, he helped create the 42 books that form The Railway Series, a cornerstone of children's publishing that continues to delight new generations through Thomas & Friends. Hosted by legendary record producer and lifelong rail enthusiast Pete Waterman, the evening promises warmth, insight and no shortage of steam-powered nostalgia. Through conversation, rare insights and untold stories, audiences will be taken on a journey across Christopher's remarkable 85 years, from his early attempts at writing (including an abandoned detective series), to his career as a government-recruited tax officer and ultimately to his pivotal role as Railway Series author from 1983 to 2011. Joining Christopher Awdry on stage will be Mike O'Donnell, the original composer behind the beloved Thomas & Friends television score; Clive Spong, whose detailed artwork helped define the visual identity of The Railway Series; and Mark Moraghan, one of the modern voices of Sodor. Together, they bring a rare, multi-generational perspective to one of the most enduring storytelling worlds ever created. There will be a special VIP package, which will include: An intimate, pre-show lecture from Christopher Awdry, with meet & greet / photo opportunity (with Christopher Awdry only), the chance to view artefacts from the Awdry family archive, plus an exclusive VIP gift bag.
Independence Day Saturday 4th July 2026 Save 10% by booking early with our Early Bird Discount - see below for details! Today's tour celebrates the influence that the prodigious US manufacturer General Motors has had on the UK rail industry since the Class 59 locomotives were introduced 40 years ago. And for those more interested in 'scoring' rare freight locomotives, we offer a good old fashioned 'Spin and Win' tour around Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire, utilising a variety of GM powered locomotives from DB Cargo, Heavy Haul and GB Railfreight. The Declaration of Independence, the founding document of the United States, was signed in Philadelphia on 4th July 1776 and 250 years on we are going to celebrate! Whether that is to mark the enduring special relationship with our American friends, or just to acknowledge the fact that we are now independent countries, we will leave that to you to decide. Onboard we will have a mobile beer festival featuring up to ten different beers and ciders, a buffet car serving some American favourites, and a few USA themed fun activities to add to the day's entertainment. This will be our only tour planned to feature freight locomotives (and mobile beer festivals!) this summer, so join us for a pint, hotdog and very rare engines on hopefully a beautiful summer's day out with your friends! Our day starts in London, where for those so inclined, the empty coaching stock move into London King's Cross is operated 'in service' from Finsbury Park for those wanting to enjoy some bonus GM traction in the form of a GBRf Class 57/3 locomotive. For most the interest will really begin on departure from London King's Cross. Our Class 69 locomotive was re-engined in 2021 and now boasts the same General Motors power unit as the ubiquitous class 66 locomotive. But our routing today is anything but common, as we take the the former Great Northern and Great Eastern 'Joint Line' from Peterborough to Sleaford and then head west, through the sleepy Lincolnshire villages of Rauceby and Ancaster. We dive under the East Coast Main Line and continue west towards Nottingham, our final pick up opportunity today. We then travel the few sho+D169rt miles to DB Cargo's base at Toton, where we are booked to exchange locomotives in the Toton Up and Down Independent which may give rise to a rare track 'bobbins' opportunity for some. From here we enjoy traction from our first Class 66 locomotive of the day. DB Cargo (then known as EWS) were the first freight company to operate Class 66 locomotives with the first arriving from the US in 1998. All have now worked at least one passenger train, and whilst some have been exported, then returned, and more recently exported again, DB Cargo still operate an expansive fleet and we will be seeking one of the rarer locomotives to operate our train today. Leaving Toton, we head north towards Chesterfield and the 'Old Road' bypassing Sheffield and heading for Moorthorpe Junction, where we join the London to Leeds main line which we follow through Wakefield Westgate. We avoid Leeds station for very good reason. By diverting at Whitehall Junction we can access Hunslet Down Reception, where our next locomotive will be waiting for us. From the loop, passengers will be able to view Heavy Haul's Midland Road depot from where our locomotive will have been stabled. Again, we are targeting a GM powered Class 66 locomotive, and several examples from the former Freightliner pool have yet to work passenger trains. We will be working closely with the team at Heavy Haul to secure such an example. Our fourth GM powered locomotive will lead us to Doncaster and we travel via Castleford and Gascoigne Wood before once again crossing the East Coast Main Line as we head towards Selby. Here we traverse the Canal Goods Curve before our final sprint towards Doncaster, where we enjoy an afternoon break of approximately two hours. Our train returns to collect its passengers with yet another GM powered locomotive. This time our train operator, GB Railfreight provides the Class 66 traction and the next leg back to Toton has been timed at 65mph so as to give the planners the maximum opportunity to provide us with a rare example from their fleet. Our route back into Nottingham is suitably circuitous. We begin by once again joining the 'Joint Line', this time in a southerly direction through Gainsborough as far as Pyewipe Junction where we take the freight curve onto the Lincoln-Newark line. Few stretches of railway have quite so many public crossings as that between Swinderby and Newark but most on board will undoubtedly be enjoying the American themed refreshments being offered from the buffet car to notice the distinctive Class 66 horn that will be in frequent use. After passing our first set down opportunity at Nottingham, we run forward to East Midlands Parkway where we reverse to regain access to Toton yard. It is here we bid farewell to our GBRf Class 66 and re-couple our Class 69 locomotive for the journey home. Our route back to London sees us follow the Midland main line as far as Syston Junction where we veer left, passing through Melton Mowbray and Stamford before reaching Peterborough and the East Coast Main Line back to London King's Cross. On behalf of our industry partners involved in the operation of todays tour, UK Railtours will be making a valuable donation to the Martin House Children's Hospice - a very special good cause which we know means a great deal to many people who have played a part in bringing you our tour today. The White Rose Saturday 11 July 2026 Join us for an exhilarating main line steam run from London's King's Cross to the historic city of York. York is world famous for its variety of visitor attractions and home to the National Railway Museum. Our train will be steam hauled throughout from London. We leave London King's Cross in the morning steam hauled by the iconic No. 34028 Eddystone and follow the East Coast Main Line route of famous express trains like the Flying Scotsman. We storm up the gradient through Gasworks Tunnel and Finsbury Park, and northwards, calling at Stevenage, Huntingdon and Peterborough to pick up more passengers. As we head north we leave the ECML at Werrington Junction and travel north easterly to Spalding. Following the Great Northern line to Spalding North Junction where we take the Sleaford line to Sleaford. From here we head in a westbound direction to continue our journey to Lincoln. We steam through Doncaster and continue northwards for our early afternoon arrival in York. There will be plenty of time for passengers to enjoy the city and all it has to offer. York has some major tourist attractions including the National Railway Museum, the largest museum of its type in Britain; the Shambles; the splendid Gothic York Minster, one of the largest of its kind in northern Europe; and the city walls. There are a number of other interesting museums, quaint alleyways, and a good variety of shops. Our train leaves York late afternoon, and we will return via the same route, running through Lincoln and Spalding. We will be stopping to set down passengers at the same stations as on the northbound journey, arriving at King's Cross in the evening. **UPDATED 31/3/26** Available Classes Premier Dining Premier Dining includes a full English breakfast and four course dinner freshly prepared on board and silver served at your seat. Summer Gala Saturday 18 July and Sunday 19 July 2026 We're celebrating the smallest locomotives in our home-fleet and extra special (and very little) visiting locomotives this summer! What to expect at the Summer Gala? Our weekend rail-fest will feature both guest and home-fleet locomotives operating a busy timetable between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. If you love steam, diesel and something a little bit different, this is the place to be! Ride behind every locomotive, visit The Engine House at Highley to break your day, or sample the finest real-ales in our pubs! In addition to the 'big trains', Kidderminster Station will host 'little trains' with a live-steam Gauge 1 model railway, running throughout the weekend. Our first guest locomotive has been announced as Kerr Stuart 'Witch' class locomotive No 4388. Built in 1926 by Kerr, Stuart & Company, this distinctive locomotive features an unusual design with outside cylinders, no front footplate and a notably small saddle tank. Our thanks to Jack Dibnah and the Foxfield Railway, for the loco's appearance. The Dorset Coast Express Wednesday 22 July 2026 We are offering a number of attractive summer day trips from London to Weymouth by steam train. These trains provide plenty of opportunity to visit the beautiful Dorset coast and relive the 'golden age' of steam. Passengers have the option of spending time at the celebrated seaside resorts of either Bournemouth or Weymouth, where both have fine sandy beaches. Each train will be hauled by a steam locomotive that was built for express passenger train work. Our train leaves London Victoria station steam hauled by the iconic No. 34028 Eddystone and travels westwards, crossing the river Thames at Barnes Bridge, through Kew and Feltham. We stop at Staines and Woking to pick up further passengers. At Winchfield, we pause for our steam locomotive to take on water before continuing to our final pick up point at Basingstoke. From Basingstoke we continue through Andover, bypassing Salisbury and on through Romsey to Southampton. We reverse direction of travel at Southampton and continue towards Weymouth, diesel hauled, with our steam locomotive on the rear. We stop at Bournemouth to set down those passengers wishing to visit this coastal resort, a spa town famous for its parks and pine trees. After leaving Bournemouth, there are spectacular views of Poole Harbour. We continue to Wareham and Dorchester travelling through classic Dorset countryside and delightful scenery. We arrive at Weymouth and have around three hours there to discover much of what this seaside town has to offer. The railway station is close to the beach and shops. We return from Weymouth steam hauled for the entire journey. We stop for our locomotive to take on water at Southampton and then continue through Winchester to Basingstoke, where we stop to set down passengers and for our steam locomotive to again take on water. We then continue to Woking and Weybridge, from where Staines passengers will return by service train and on to our final destination at London Waterloo. *By service train from Weybridge. The Gloucestershire-based company, founded by Peter Watts, organised railtours across the country from 1973 and became a much-loved name in the enthusiast scene. Fittingly, several of our resident diesel locomotives have themselves hauled Pathfinder excursions over the years. Throughout Sunday we will see all of our trains bearing one of the headboards from their past excursions. This will also be the final time to meet the former Pathfinder team at the railway, including Peter.

The Ancient Kingdom Saturday 22nd August 2026 Taking full advantage of a long midsummer day we venture north to the Kingdom of Northumbria. We have three very different options for you to choose from - the wonderful Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the delightfully quaint Heatherslaw Light Railway or a visit to picturesque Alnwick. Our journey takes us through York, past Durham Castle and Cathedral and we glimpse Antony Gormley's extraordinary 'Angel of the North' as we approach Newcastle. After pausing at Alnmouth we reach Berwick-upon-Tweed, the border town still redolent of centuries of conflict between the English and the Scots. Those who choose to remain in Berwick will have around three and a half hours to explore, or choose from one of the three off train options below! OFF TRAIN OPTION - ALNWICK AT LEISURE The town of Alnwick dates back to AD600 and retains much of its original character. Alnwick Castle, the second largest inhabited castle after Windsor, is popular with film makers; Blackadder, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Harry Potter were all made here. Alnwick Garden is a complex of formal gardens, featuring various themed plantings designed around a central water cascade. It is the most ambitious garden created in the UK post war. The old Alnwick station is now home to Barter Books, one of England's largest and most famous secondhand bookshops. This option includes a brief coach transfer between Alnmouth Station and Alnwick. Because there is such a choice of things to do we have not included any admission charges. You will have around four hours to explore. OFF TRAIN OPTION - THE HOLY ISLAND OF LINDISFARNE Perched tantalisingly just off the Northumberland coast and cut off by the tide twice a day, Holy Island and its Priory are considered one of the holiest sites in Britain. We leave the train at Alnmouth where coaches will be waiting for the journey to Lindisfarne which includes the narrow causeway that connects the island with the mainland. We can assure potential participants that we have checked the tide tables! We have some three hours here, time to take a walk to the castle or just explore this extraordinary place. Don't forget to purchase a bottle of the local produce, Lindisfarne Mead. OFF TRAIN OPTION - THE HEATHERSLAW LIGHT RAILWAY One of England's lesser known minor railways, this fifteen inch gauge line runs for two miles, following the River Till through an area rich in wildlife, set between the Cheviot Hills and the border with Scotland. Coaches meet the train at Berwick for the twelve mile run to the Heatherslaw Light Railway where we will enjoy a break of about three hours. Your supplement for this option includes coach transfers and a return journey on the railway. First Class Dining includes The Great British Breakfast and a four course dinner, served at your seat by The Railway Diners. First Class Dining is not available from, or back to Doncaster due to time constraints. A well stocked buffet car serving a range of snacks and drinks will be available for those travelling in First Class Non Dining and Standard Class. Please select your chosen off train option at the time of booking to avoid disappointment. Shunter Sunday Sunday 6th September 2026 Are you ready to travel back to the 1980s, when British Rail blue dominated the railway and diesel power ruled the rails? If so, then back by popular demand following last year's successful event, our two BR blue shunters?03078 and 08915?are once again stepping out of the yard and into the spotlight for our 2026 Shunter Sunday! Usually confined to shunting duties and standby work for the steam fleet, this is their chance to take charge of the line. Throughout the day, the pair will haul a varied mix of passenger and freight services, recreating the sights and sounds of a bygone era. Expect double-headed action, top-and-tail formations, and plenty of rare mileage behind both locomotives as they work a busy and intensive timetable. Whether you joined us last year or are looking to experience something a little different, this is a day not to be missed.
