Visiting Locomotives
Class 14 No. D9553
BR Class 14 D9553 is a preserved diesel-hydraulic 'Teddy Bear' locomotive, built at Swindon in 1964-65. After industrial use at BSC Corby Steelworks, it saw extensive service at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway and later moved to the Caledonian Railway. The livery is one originally proposed by British Rail specifically for the Class 14s prior to them selecting Blue & Grey as British Rail's corporate colours.
Visiting courtesy of Jon Gill
Class 20 No. 20166
Class 20 No. 20166 was built at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows and entered service as No. D8166 in 1966. Like a number of Class 20s, it spent time working on Channel Tunnel construction for Rail Freight Services (RFS) after being withdrawn from British Rail (BR). It is currently painted in unbranded Harry Needle Railroad Company (HNRC) / Swietelsky colours.
Visiting courtesy of Jon Gill.
HYMEK No. D7017
The Class 35 'Hymek' No. D7017 is located at the West Somerset Railway (WSR), it is a diesel-hydraulic locomotive built for BR Western Region in 1961. It entered service in 1962 at Bristol Bath Road and was withdrawn in 1975 following British Rail's move to standardise on diesel-electric traction, having outlasted many of its classmates. It was preserved by The Diesel and Electric Preservation Group, going on to haul the first service operated by a diesel loco purchased by public subscription in the UK and the first mainline diesel loco to operate on the preserved WSR in 1977.
Visiting courtesy of The Diesel and Electric Preservation Group Limited.
37250
Class 37 No. 37250
Sporting a distinctive English, Welsh, Scottish (EWS) livery. Built in 1964 at the English Electric Vulcan Foundry, this preserved BR Class 37 was originally allocated to Cardiff Canton. Over time it has had several liveries, including Dutch and Civil Engineers. In November 2003, the locomotive was allocated to work in France on building the new high-speed lines, before being bought into preservation in 2008 by its current owner. Following its move to the Eden Valley Railway, it made its way to Wensleydale Railway in 2011 where its restoration began.

Saturday 20 June 2026: HDL English Riviera Express railtour
Our third railtour of 2026 is to the Devon seaside resort of Paignton, via the cathedral city of Exeter.
This 529-mile railtour will pick up passengers at our usual stops from Hastings to Tonbridge, then Redhill, Guildford, and Reading. Passengers alighting at Exeter St. Davids should have well over 4 hours there; those remaining on board should have almost 3 hours in Paignton.
Facilities and refreshments
This outing will be formed of both our DEMUs (1013 the 6-coach DEMU, and 1001 the 4-coach DEMU), making a 10-coach train.
Our Buffet car, accessible to passengers in DEMU 1013 (i.e., coaches A, B, C, D and E), will be open all day for the sale of hot & cold food and drink at reasonable prices. A trolley service of hot & cold drinks and refreshments will operate in Standard Class areas of both DEMUs; in addition, a mini-counter service will operate from one of the inoperative guard's-vans in DEMU 1001 (for coaches W, X, Y and Z)..
In First Class (coaches A and B) an inclusive at-table service of drinks and light refreshments is offered through the day, with tea/coffee and toast after boarding, sandwiches prior to arrival, and savoury biscuits with cheese & wine on the return leg of the trip.
Fares
Standard Class fares seat in trailer coach (Buffet / C / D / X / Y) £99
bay of 4 seats in trailer coach (Buffet / C / D / X / Y) £380
seat in motor coach (E / W / Z) £106
First Class fares seat in trailer coach (B) £126
seat in motor coach (A) £133
Part-fares
We are aware that some of you may wish to make a booking just between Exeter St. Davids and Paignton (either single or return). Please check back here from Sunday 7 June, at which point we may (depending upon various factors) open bookings to part-fares.
Route and Timings
Route
From the Hastings Line up to Tonbridge, we proceed west via Godstone to Redhill where we reverse, then continuing west via Dorking Deepdene to Guildford, and north-west via Wokingham and on to our final pickup at Reading. From there we run via the Berks & Hants line, through the Westbury area, and ultimately passing through Cogload Junction to join the Bristol to Exeter Line. After Exeter we join the South Devon Main Line, passing the famous seaside section along the sea wall at Dawlish and the tunnels beyond, to reach Newton Abbott. Avoiding the stiff climb up to Dainton tunnel, we turn left onto the 7½-mile Riviera Line / Torquay Branch down to Paignton.
The return leg of this railtour is similar to the outward.

Saturday 18th July 2026
Remember May 2026 when we took a Hastings DEMU to Scotland? Well we are doing it again! But this time we are going West, to the glorious coastal town of Minehead.
With thanks to GBRf and Hastings Diesels Limited (HDL), we are pleased to present this exciting opportunity to join the Hastings 6-coach unit on an exploration from the Southern extremities of Hastings, all the way West to Minehead, and back again! For those of you on board any of the previous Hastings Unit trips, you will know that this will be another special trip with fond memories made along the way.
And in true BLS Style, we will be covering a number of loops and rare track items of interest, which we are sure will be a draw.
The Hastings DEMUs are from a class of 23 diesel-electric trains built in the late 1950s to replace steam-hauled stock operating between London and Hastings via Tunbridge Wells. The six-coach units, incorporating diesel generators at each end, were unique in having especially narrow bodies which enabled them to pass through the unusually narrow tunnels on the Hastings line. We are very lucky to still be able to travel on one of these beautifully maintained units, after they were finally withdrawn in 1986.
With a number of easy boarding locations including Hastings, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Redhill, Reading, Oxford, Moreton-in-Marsh, Honeybourne and Worcester, you are sure to be able to join us for this fantastic day out to the seaside.
After our trip over the Cotswold Line, we head South towards Bristol and onwards to Taunton, before covering the rare and much sought after connection to the West Somerset Railway.
Twenty miles of heritage railway through stunning Somerset countryside and coast. The railway, a true country branch line of the old Great Western Railway, is full of fascination whether you are looking for a nostalgic ride back in time through lovely countryside or to study the railway and industrial heritage which our line preserves.
The West Somerset Railway will be operating their Blue Timetable which will feature both steam and diesel. The diesel diagram is expected to be covered by a Class 33. Tickets will be sold on-board to save time on arrival. You can find out more at their website: https://www.west-somerset-railway.co.uk/calendar
A Set Down and short break at Bishops Lydeard will allow you to take some treasured photos of the train, plus look at the depot and station environment there. We continue directly up to Minehead, arriving at the station literally opposite the beach, just before 15.00. After a short break here for fish and chips, some clear crisp sea air or to visit Butlins for some World Class entertainment, we return to Bishops Lydeard before covering the connection back into Taunton.
Onwards back through Bristol, Cheltenham and Worcester, before returning again over the Cotswold Line and back to Oxford, Reading and ultimately Hastings, arriving sometime around 22:00. A truly epic day and the Thumper will be doing its best to drown out all other noise around it throughout the day!
For those with their highlighters ready, we have a multitude of track offerings for you, including Down Reading Spur, Cheltenham Lansdown DGL, Bristol Parkway DGL, Bristol Temple Meads Down and Up Through, Taunton D&U Relief, West Somerset Railway heritage connection, Highbridge & Burnham Goods, Cheltenham High Street UGL and Reading Low Level.
We are working in partnership with the fantastic team at HDL, who will provide their famous buffet service and souvenir sales stand. There will be a charity raffle supporting the Cotswold Line Promotion Group.
All times and routing are indicative until confirmed by Network Rail. Final routing and timings are usually confirmed by Network Rail five days before travel and will be enclosed with your e-ticket.

- Bluebell Diesel Gala 2026 - Celebrating 40 Years of Network SouthEast!
Friday 4 September to Sunday 6 September 2026
As part of the gala, we will proudly celebrate the 40th anniversary of Network SouthEast (NSE) - marking four decades since the launch of this bod, colourful and much-loved era of British railway history. Network SouthEast transformed commuter and regional rail travel across London and the South East, and its distinctive red, white and blue branding remains iconic to this day. NSE 40 will form a fantastic addition to the 2026 Diesel Gala, with plans already underway to ensure the anniversary is celebrated in fitting style.
We are delighted to be working in partnership with NSE Friends, the 1305 Thumper Gang, and the B350 Preservation Group to help bring this celebration to life. Together, we aim to showcase and honour the legacy of Network SouthEast through locomotives from the era, rolling stock, displays and carefully curated elements that capture the spirit of the era.
Join us as we celebrate 40 years of Network SouthEast and make Diesel Gala 2026 a true highlight of the heritage railway calendar!
Visiting locomotives include 33108 courtesy of the 33/1 Preservation Company and 50026 courtesy of Paul Spracklen and PTG Tours.

- Industrial Steam of South Wales II Gala
Friday 25th / Saturday 26th / Sunday 27th September 2026
Our Steam Gala returns for 2026.
The only steam gala in South Wales this year.
This year sees our second Industrial Steam of South Wales Gala, the last having taken place 15 years ago in 2011.
Join us for three incredible days of steam power in the Eastern Valley of Wales, at the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Expect to hear the engines working hard as they power up our steep gradients. An intensive timetable will be in operation with both passenger and demonstration freight trains operating.
?This year's line up will feature locomotives that originally worked in South Wales.
Visiting Locomotive Announcement.
We are delighted to announce the first visiting locomotive for the gala - GWR Pannier Tank No 7754.
Built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow for the GWR in 1930, 7754 was allocated to Reading, Old Oak Common and finally Wellington (Shropshire).
Following withdrawal from service in January 1959, the locomotive was sold to the National Coal Board, where it first worked at Talywain Colliery, approximately just 3 miles down the valley from our railway
A few months later 7754 was transferred to Mountain Ash, travelling their over BR metals in a freight train. It worked alongside our recently overhauled locomotive No. 2074 'Llantarnam Abbey' and stored locomotive No. 1680 'Sir John'.
7754 was the last surviving 5700 class locomotive in industrial service and was later donated by the NCB to National Museum Wales, who placed it on permanent loan to the Llangollen Railway. The locomotive is now owned by the Llangollen Railway Trust.
We still have TWO more former South Wales locomotives to announce - subject to agreements and availability.
Details will be announced shortly.

- The Worcester Pullman
Saturday 26th September 2026
Today's journey provides a rare opportunity to visit Worcester, with different outward and return routes, behind the magnificent Merchant Navy class steam locomotive 35028 'Clan Line'. Relax as you enjoy a full day on this splendid train steeped in history, and all with the incredible hospitality, attentive service and fine dining of British Pullman, A Belmond Train.
Upon departing Victoria a delicious brunch is served with Bellini as we run via the West London Line to gain the Great Western mainline at Acton, then proceed via Slough, Reading and Didcot. At Swindon we take the 'Golden Valley' route through Kemble, the summit at Sapperton tunnel and Stroud before passing Gloucester. Our Pullman train then continues to the charming cathedral city of Worcester, on the banks of the River Severn.
A three hour break in Worcester will give plenty of time to take in the many attractions the city has to offer, before the departure back to London. A sumptuous four course dinner with wine and Champagne will be served as our return journey unfolds. 'Clan Line' will return from Worcester via the scenic Cotswold line, through Evesham, Honeybourne, Moreton-in-Marsh and Charlbury, which rarely sees a steam train these days. Stopping for water shortly after Oxford, our outward route will be regained at Didcot, again returning to the Capital by way of Reading, Slough, Acton and the West London Line.
Back at London Victoria it will be time to say goodbye to your carriage hosts, our splendid train and locomotive after this rare opportunity to spend a full day on the British Pullman behind steam.
What's included?
Luxury Train - A round-trip aboard the world famous British Pullman, a Belmond Train.
A Fine Dining Experience - A welcome Bellini, a delicious three-course brunch with morning tea and coffee, a champagne reception on your return to the train, a gourmet four-course dinner accompanied by wine chosen by our sommelier, coffee, tea, and petit fours.
Time to Explore - Free time for sightseeing, shopping and exploration.
