The Class 35 'Hymek' No. D7017 is located at the West Somerset Railway (WSR), it is a diesel-hydraulic locomotive built for BR Western Region in 1961. It entered service in 1962 at Bristol Bath Road and was withdrawn in 1975 following British Rail's move to standardise on diesel-electric traction, having outlasted many of its classmates. It was preserved by The Diesel and Electric Preservation Group, going on to haul the first service operated by a diesel loco purchased by public subscription in the UK and the first mainline diesel loco to operate on the preserved WSR in 1977.

5, 6, 7, 13, 14 June 2026
The people's engine returns! We're thrilled to announce the visit of the magnificent LNER Class A3 60103 'Flying Scotsman' to the East Lancashire Railway. This record-breaking engine is making a long anticipated return to our line, so don't miss out on this rare opportunity to see the People's Engine up close.
First entering service in 1923, Flying Scotsman became a British icon, representing the very best of steam-era innovation. She was the first steam locomotive that was officially recorded at 100 miles per hour, and a century later she still attracts worldwide attention.
Her journey has not always been easy - having narrowly escaped being scrapped during the Beeching cuts to multiple ownerships, global tours and painstaking restorations.
Through it all, Scotsman has remained a beloved part of the country's heritage.
The ELR has been privileged to play a key part in that story, being the site of Scotsman's historic restoration. Since then her visits have drawn record numbers.

Saturday 13 June 2026
Join us on this special steam hauled train that will leave London Victoria early on Saturday morning for a scenic journey with a nostalgic steam hauled train to the attractive city of Portsmouth. You can chose to alight at Portsmouth and Southsea or continue to the end of the line at Portsmouth Harbour.
We depart from London Victoria behind our steam locomotive, which will be working hard as we make our way out of the Capital and run through Clapham Junction to make our way via Barnes and the bridge over the Thames towards Staines, our next pickup point. We thread our way through Virginia Water and Chertsey and join the LSWR main line at Byfleet.
After a fast run along the South Western main line towards Woking, our final stop for passengers, we leave the Basingstoke line here and make our way towards Guildford. We now take the Portsmouth Direct line away from Guildford which is renowned for its pleasant scenery and undulating gradients which include a 4 mile climb at 1 in 80 up to Haslemere.
Running across country via Godalming to Haslemere, we will pause here to water the loco. We will climb hard to Buriton Summit before descending through Rowlands Castle towards the coastline at Havant, where the main south coast line is joined.
The Portsmouth Flyer now leaves the main line to Fareham and Southampton at Farlington Junction as we make our way towards Portsmouth and Southsea station, where you will have the option of alighting here to visit this historic city. Apart from the shops and museums, the city has a navel feel about it. Continue to the end of the line at Portsmouth Harbour and experience its true navel heritage.
Portsmouth is a port city and naval base on the south coast, mostly spread across Portsea Island. It is known for its maritime heritage and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The dockyard is home to the interactive National Museum of the Royal Navy, the wooden warship HMS Victory, where Nelson died in the Battle of Trafalgar, and HMS Warrior 1860. The Tudor ship Mary Rose is also conserved in a dockyard museum. The harbour is a busy place and you can take a trip up the Spinnaker Tower for the best view over the Solent.
After time in Portsmouth, we return to London via Fareham and Southampton steam hauled, calling at our outward pick up stations to set down before arriving back into London Victoria.

Ride on our beautifully preserved fleet of vintage buses, included in your fare! Stations and passenger trains will be specially adorned and decorated. The bands will be announced when we receive confirmation from them. The bar will be open throughout when you work up a thirst from the dancing.

A final farewell on the train
Come and step back in time with us, immerse yourself in a flavour of what a rural British steam railway could have appeared in the height of summer, as 'forties-dressed civilians and British and Allies military personnel, Home Guard, ARP Wardens, American GIs and other re-enactors mingle with passengers, and period road vehicles to and fro.
Ride on our beautifully preserved fleet of vintage buses, included in your fare! Stations and passenger trains will be specially adorned and decorated. From the moment you arrive, you'll be immersed in the sights, sounds, and spirit of wartime Britain, with music, entertainment, and re-enactments bringing the era to life.
Passengers are encouraged to come dressed in 1940s style civilian clothing.

This special tour includes a journey over the entire majestic route of the famous Settle to Carlisle railway, with great limestone peaks and deep valleys we travel over viaducts and through tunnels on this masterpiece of Victorian engineering - including the famous Ribblehead Viaduct. Following a break in the historic border city of Carlisle our journey continues along the scenic Cumbrian coastal line.
Our train heads into the Yorkshire Dales for a spectacular journey over the magnificent high Pennines. The sheer scale of the scenery is apparent as we pass such famous landmarks as Ribblehead Viaduct with stunning views of the three peaks. One magnificent sight follows another before we gradually descend into the tranquil Eden Valley and the border city of Carlisle for a break of around two hours.
We return around the longest and most scenic coastal line in England - the beautiful twisting Cumbrian coast route hugs the coastline offering spectacular views across the Solway Firth and towards the Isle of Man, passing historic Whitehaven, pretty Ravenglass and around Morecambe Bay with the background of the Lake District Mountains aglow with the setting sun.

Step into a world of timeless elegance as you embark on a nostalgic journey to the picture postcard seaside village of Paignton or Kingswear.
As you settle into the beautifully restored heritage carriages we will make our way west through rolling countryside to Taunton where we are joined by our steam locomotive for the scenic run along one of England's most breathtaking coastal routes.
We follow the estuary of the River Exe, sweeping around its mouth and running beside the shoreline for mile after mile. The journey continues on the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway, where our steam engine is put through its paces, climbing high above the Devon hills before descending into the Dart Estuary at Kingswear.
Whether you opt for Kingswear or Paignton, your day will be enriched by coastal charm, heritage attractions, and the relaxed rhythm of seaside life.
This trip will be steam-hauled between Taunton and Kingswear in both directions.
Destinations
Paignton
One of the brightest jewels in the English Riviera's crown, as you arrive in the seaside resort of Paignton, you are met with the welcoming sight of its long stretch of beautiful and easily accessible beachfront, promenade, traditional pier, colourful beach huts and green.
Kingswear for Dartmouth
Set opposite the town of Dartmouth, on the banks of the River Dart, Kingswear is a charming characterful village that has some of the most beautiful views across the Dart. The village is the perfect place to while away a few hours in this pretty seaside destination. For those who like to explore a little further afield, it is just a short ferry crossing from Kingswear to Dartmouth, a vibrant harbour town with pretty cobbled streets lined with independent shops and galleries.

- The Cumbrian Mountain Express
Saturday 20 June 2026
The Cumbrian Mountain Express provides a wonderful opportunity to get out and about during the summer months, with the added bonus of steam haulage over the Northern Fells, including the spectacular Settle & Carlisle Railway. We have a high speed journey down the West Coast Main Line to Carnforth, hauled by a blue Class 86 electric locomotive. We then enjoy a circular steam tour outwards via Shap to Carlisle and back via the Settle and Carlisle line. We return from Preston to London behind our blue electric locomotive.
We leave London Euston with electric traction, and speed north along the West Coast Main Line (WCML). We stop to pick up passengers at Watford Junction, Milton Keynes, Rugby (where passengers from Northampton join by service train), Nuneaton and Crewe. We continue north along the WCML to Preston, our final stop to pick up passengers.
We continue through Lancaster to Carnforth, where we change motive power to a steam locomotive from the Carnforth pool. Leaving Carnforth, our steam locomotive will be working hard when we climb the first severe gradient up to Grayrigg. We then travel through the beautiful Lune Gorge to Tebay, gaining speed for the ascent to Shap. This well-known section of the WCML has a gradient of 1 in 75 and, in the former days of steam locomotives, banking engines from Tebay were often used to assist trains. After crossing the Cumbrian Fells we descend to Penrith, and then head for Carlisle. There will be around two hours in Carlisle, providing time to explore this ancient 'Border' city with its castle, cathedral, Tullie House Museum, and shopping centre.
We leave Carlisle and join the Settle & Carlisle Railway, one of the most well known and best loved stretches of railway line in Britain. We soon begin climbing, and then at Appleby, we stop for our steam locomotive to take on water. The climbing continues through scenic Kirkby Stephen towards the highest railway summit in England at Ais Gill, 1169 feet above sea level. We pass over tall viaducts, including the famous one at Ribblehead, and through tunnels. There are magnificent views across the Fells and to the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. We should have a fast run out of the hills, through Settle, until we stop again for our locomotive to take on water.
?Our journey continues through Hellifield and Clitheroe to Preston where we say goodbye to our steam locomotive. We pass though Wigan and Warrington en route to Crewe hauled by our blue class 86 electric locomotive with a fast run to London expected. We stop at the same stations as on the outward journey to set down passengers.

Saturday 20 June 2026: HDL English Riviera Express railtour
Our third railtour of 2026 is to the Devon seaside resort of Paignton, via the cathedral city of Exeter.
This 529-mile railtour will pick up passengers at our usual stops from Hastings to Tonbridge, then Redhill, Guildford, and Reading. Passengers alighting at Exeter St. Davids should have well over 4 hours there; those remaining on board should have almost 3 hours in Paignton.
Facilities and refreshments
This outing will be formed of both our DEMUs (1013 the 6-coach DEMU, and 1001 the 4-coach DEMU), making a 10-coach train.
Our Buffet car, accessible to passengers in DEMU 1013 (i.e., coaches A, B, C, D and E), will be open all day for the sale of hot & cold food and drink at reasonable prices. A trolley service of hot & cold drinks and refreshments will operate in Standard Class areas of both DEMUs; in addition, a mini-counter service will operate from one of the inoperative guard's-vans in DEMU 1001 (for coaches W, X, Y and Z)..
In First Class (coaches A and B) an inclusive at-table service of drinks and light refreshments is offered through the day, with tea/coffee and toast after boarding, sandwiches prior to arrival, and savoury biscuits with cheese & wine on the return leg of the trip.
Fares
Standard Class fares seat in trailer coach (Buffet / C / D / X / Y) £99
bay of 4 seats in trailer coach (Buffet / C / D / X / Y) £380
seat in motor coach (E / W / Z) £106
First Class fares seat in trailer coach (B) £126

Route and Timings
Route
From the Hastings Line up to Tonbridge, we proceed west via Godstone to Redhill where we reverse, then continuing west via Dorking Deepdene to Guildford, and north-west via Wokingham and on to our final pickup at Reading. From there we run via the Berks & Hants line, through the Westbury area, and ultimately passing through Cogload Junction to join the Bristol to Exeter Line. After Exeter we join the South Devon Main Line, passing the famous seaside section along the sea wall at Dawlish and the tunnels beyond, to reach Newton Abbott. Avoiding the stiff climb up to Dainton tunnel, we turn left onto the 7½-mile Riviera Line / Torquay Branch down to Paignton.
The return leg of this railtour is similar to the outward.

- 85 Years Of Letting Off Steam: An Evening With Christopher Awdry
Thursday 25 June 2026
On 25 June, London's iconic Eventim Apollo will host a truly special one-off evening. Promoted by Splot and Full Steam Ahead, '85 Years Of Letting Off Steam', celebrates the life and legacy of Christopher Awdry, storyteller, railway historian, and custodian of one of the world's most beloved literary worlds.
For over eight decades, Christopher Awdry has lived a life shaped by steam, story and tradition. Together with his father, Wilbert Awdry, the Reverend who first imagined the Island of Sodor, he helped create the 42 books that form The Railway Series, a cornerstone of children's publishing that continues to delight new generations through Thomas & Friends.
Hosted by legendary record producer and lifelong rail enthusiast Pete Waterman, the evening promises warmth, insight and no shortage of steam-powered nostalgia. Through conversation, rare insights and untold stories, audiences will be taken on a journey across Christopher's remarkable 85 years, from his early attempts at writing (including an abandoned detective series), to his career as a government-recruited tax officer and ultimately to his pivotal role as Railway Series author from 1983 to 2011.
Joining Christopher Awdry on stage will be Mike O'Donnell, the original composer behind the beloved Thomas & Friends television score; Clive Spong, whose detailed artwork helped define the visual identity of The Railway Series; and Mark Moraghan, one of the modern voices of Sodor. Together, they bring a rare, multi-generational perspective to one of the most enduring storytelling worlds ever created.
There will be a special VIP package, which will include: An intimate, pre-show lecture from Christopher Awdry, with meet & greet / photo opportunity (with Christopher Awdry only), the chance to view artefacts from the Awdry family archive, plus an exclusive VIP gift bag.

- The Cumbrian Coast Express
Saturday 27 June 2026
Our journey will combine the scenic grandeur of the Cumbrian Fells with the exposed Cumbrian coastline that skirts the western edge of the Lake District. We have a high-speed journey down the West Coast Main Line to Carlisle, hauled by a blue Class 86 electric locomotive. We then enjoy a steam tour from Carlisle back to Carnforth via the Cumbria Coast.
We return from Carnforth to London behind our blue electric locomotive.
We leave London Euston with electric traction, and speed north along the West Coast Main Line (WCML). We stop to pick up passengers at Milton Keynes, Rugby (where passengers from Northampton join by service train), Nuneaton and Crewe.
?We continue north along the WCML to Preston, our final stop to pick up passengers.
We pass through Lancaster and along the edge of Morecambe Bay before we arrive at Carnforth. Leaving Carnforth, we pass the Brief Encounter cafeand commence the long climb up to Grayrigg. We then travel through the beautiful Lune Gorge to Tebay, before the notoriously steep ascent to Shap. After crossing the Cumbrian Fells we descend to Penrith, and then head for Carlisle. There will be time available in Carlisle to explore this ancient city with its cathedral and castle, plus an assortment of shops and cafes.
We leave Carlisle steam hauled and our return journey to Carnforth takes the scenic coastal route around the Cumbrian Coast. After Maryport, we run along the shoreline through to the industrialised port town of Workington, once a centre for the production of iron and steel. There are spectacular cliff edge views as we journey southwards from Workington through to Whitehaven, with the Isle of Man visible on a clear day across the Irish Sea. We run very close to the shoreline for several miles prior to St Bees, famous for its priory and school. We pass Sellafield, where the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority plant dominates the landscape. At Ravenglass, we might catch a glimpse of the narrow gauge Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway which is normally steam operated.
At Millom, we head inland and follow the sweeping estuary through Foxfield and Kirkby in Furness. After Ulverston, we cross Leven Viaduct and curve along the edge of the bay through to Grange-over-Sands. There are more views across Morecambe Bay as we cross the lengthy Kent Viaduct at Arnside and approach Carnforth. Here, we shall say farewell to our gallant steam locomotive and our blue Class 86 electric locomotive will take over for a fast run to London Euston. We stop at the same stations as on the outward journey to set down passengers.

The Mazey Day Cornishman will leave Dorridge diesel hauled by two Class 37 locomotives early in the morning which provides a convenient departure point for Warwickshire and west Birmingham customers to join. We then make our way to Birmingham New Street where a further pick will be made. Our journey southwards will follow the Bristol main line through to pick up stops at Worcestershire Parkway and Cheltenham, followed by a call at Cam & Dursley. Our last pick up stations will be at Bristol Parkway and Bristol Temple Meads.
From Bristol we will speed across the Somerset Levels and over the border into Devon after the climb to Whiteball Summit, arriving in Exeter as a prelude to the run along the Exe estuary and the famous Dawlish Seawall. Enjoy the glimmer of the waves reflecting on our train as we run along the shoreline of the English Channel through Dawlish towards Teignmouth, one of the great rail journeys of England. Cutting inland, we will follow the Teign estuary to Newton Abbot where we encounter the first of many of the day's steep inclines as we climb the challenging east side of Dainton Bank. More climbing follows once through Totnes, as we take a run at Rattery Bank and along the edge of Dartmoor, on our way to Plymouth. There will be a short leg stretch in Plymouth.
From Plymouth, we will cross the river Tamar on the spectacular Royal Albert Bridge, engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1859. The two lenticular iron spans take the railway line high across the Tamar into Cornwall. Our journey continues to twist and turn through Cornwall with its many viaducts and tunnels to pass through on the way. We will pause at Par to set down passengers who may wish to explore the local area that includes the pretty harbour villages of Fowey or Charlestown, or perhaps take the train to Newquay if a seaside destination appeals to you. As we continue through Cornwall, you will see the characteristic white hills from the china clay industrial mining as we make our way through to Truro, where there will be the option to detrain to visit this interesting cathedral city, or perhaps take the local train to the attractive harbour town of Falmouth.
As we progress into deepest Cornwall, your journey will include rolling countryside all the way, with frequent sightings of Cornish Engine Houses visible from the train, once the heart of the extensive tin mining industry. Our penultimate stop to set down will be at St Erth where you can opt to alight and take the short branch train to St Ives. As we near journeys end at Penzance, there is still one more gem to see at Marazion as we pass the spectacular St Michaels Mount that dominates the skyline. We will be aiming to arrive at Penzance around lunch time and you will have now have time to visit Penzance and experience the festivities of Mazey Day. The town is right by the station and there are promenade walks by the waterside to allow you to soak up the atmosphere during your free time in Penzance. Apart from all the Mazey Day street festivities going on during your visit, be sure to sample a real Cornish pasty!
Once our time comes to reluctantly leave the Mazey Day celebrations, we will return to Dorridge by way of our outward route, setting down at our earlier pick up points, thus ending our full day to Cornwall from the West Midlands.

- Model Railway Weekend
Saturday 27 June and Sunday 28 June 2026
'For 2026 we are pleased to announce that the event will be bigger, broader, and more exciting than ever before.'
Hi all, my name is Stepney and this year is my 150th year!
I am a small Terrier locomotive. I live and work at the Bluebell Railway. I have had all sorts of fun and adventures here at the railway and now it's my big birthday.
Some of you will know when the Rev W Awdry visited the Bluebell Railway many years ago and then wrote a story about me and the preservation work of a Heritage Railway. That was very exciting! In his book he wrote about me visiting the Island of Sodor and making lots of new friends.
Please come and visit me during our model railway weekend, meet some of my friends, some very old and some not so old. For more information sign up to our newsletter and social media channels - there are exciting things to tell you about later in the year!
We are pleased to announce that Ffarquhar Branch will be joining us at the Bluebell Railway Model Railway Weekend this June.
This is a rare opportunity to see one of the most influential and historically important model railway layouts in Britain.
The Ffarquhar Branch is a model railway of outstanding historical importance, created by the Rev. W. Awdry, author of The Railway Series. First built in 1955, it was designed from the outset as an exhibition layout, reflecting Awdry's lifelong passion for realistic railway operation and accurate modelling.
In 1968, the layout was comprehensively rebuilt into the form we see today. This redesign allowed it to fit more easily within Awdry's new home and, famously, into the boot of his new car, ensuring it could continue travelling to exhibitions. By this point, most of The Railway Series had already been written, so the layout was not created to develop the stories themselves. However, it continued to influence Awdry's work, later inspiring characters and events that appeared in his final book, Tramway Engines.
Although the layout dates from the mid-1950s, much of the rolling stock predates it. The model of Percy, for example, was built in 1948 to show the illustrator how this new character should appear during the preparation of Troublesome Engines. Similarly, the origins of Awdry's Stepney models lie in 1963, when they were constructed to demonstrate the locomotive's complex livery in three dimensions for illustration purposes.
The layout represents the terminus at Ffarquhar and its surrounding branch line, capturing the character of a lightly-built rural railway. It showcases Awdry's belief that model railways should operate as real railways do, combining visual charm with credible, engaging operation.
Today, the Ffarquhar Branch is carefully preserved by the Talyllyn Railway, and its appearance at the Bluebell Railway Model Railway Weekend offers a rare opportunity to see a layout with direct links to both railway and literary history.
We are very grateful to everyone at the Talyllyn Railway for their support in making this special appearance possible.
The Ffarquhar Branch will be on display alongside a wide range of other layouts, traders, and attractions, all set within the unique living heritage environment of the Bluebell Railway.

June 27th @ 11:30 am - June 28th 2026 @ 4:00 pm
110 years ago, in 1916, a Bedford engineering company created the first Motor Rail locomotive. Trading as 'Simplex', they went on to become one of the UK's most prolific builders of narrow gauge internal-combustion locos. This will be a special weekend celebrating that heritage through the significant collection of such locos at Apedale. Frequent trains will operate using Motor Rail diesel and petrol locos. The event will run from 1130 until 4pm on both days. If you own a Motor Rail and fancy bringing it to join the fun, get in touch via the website 'contact us' button.
Special fares will be charged for this special weekend!
